Jair Bolsonaro detained after being considered a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
