Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
